Mission

The Medicare Mental Health Workforce Coalition is a group of national and state organizations collectively representing hundreds of thousands of mental health and addiction disorder providers, clients, patients, and other stakeholders. The Coalition is committed to strengthening Medicare beneficiaries’ access to mental and behavioral health care. Our goals include building the provider workforce we need and modernizing coordination of delivery and payment systems.

Coalition Goals

The Coalition’s founding mission was to establish Mental Health Counselors (MHCs) and Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) as approved Medicare providers. This was achieved through the 2022 Mental Health Access Improvement Act, which enabled MHCs and MFTs to begin billing Medicare in 2024.

We now focus on ensuring proper implementation of this legislation and working with CMS regulations governing provider enrollment and billing.

Our broader mission is expanding access to quality mental health care by strengthening the behavioral health workforce, addressing provider shortages, and advocating for equitable mental health policies across diverse communities.
